Christmas Mantle

Hey guys!

I wanted to show you my almost no cost Christmas mantle today. I created this holiday vignette using things that I already had around the house! For realsies!

I started with my set of rusty stars that had to be relocated to make room for the Christmas tree. I just leaned them against my painting, and added some greenery trimmed from the tree.

I tied some burlap ribbon around a candle that I already had, and added a silver bell. I also made a burlap bow and put it on my vine wreath. I added a silver bell to that too.

Complete with some more sliver bells and some battery operated white lights and I'm callin' it done!

Whatcha think?

DIY "Tree Skirt"

Deck the halls with....wooden crates!

Huh?

Yup! That's what we did here at Eventually Cottage this year!

I love the look of beautiful Christmas trees with beautiful tree skirts. I've tried those beautiful tree skirts...many times. With 4 dogs, and 2 cats it.just.never.worked.out! All those beautiful tree skirts ever did was frustrate me!

So when I was searching Pinterest (shocking, I know) I found this pic and a lightbulb went off in my little head!

I dragged the hubs to Michaels with me. We picked up two unfinished wood crates like these...

The tree stand obviously didn't fit in just one so we took a side off of each crate. The hubs then stained the crates.

We picked up Betsy (the tree), and slid the crates under her stand.

I didn't like the way you could see the handles, so I made this sign to attach to the front. It covers them up nicely!

So whatcha think?

I'm also offering the sign for sale in case you want one like mine! It's 4"x18", painted a pretty off white, sanded, and stained for a rustic look. It'll be $18 plus $6 shipping. Email me at dawn@eventuallycottage.com if you want one!

Grrr!

Hey there!  You guys might remember a couple of weeks ago when I posted about the Christmas ornament that I was selling with the hopes of donating 50% of the cost of each one to revitalize the Jersey shore after it was devastated by Hurricane Sandy.  If you don't remember, you can read about it here.
I had gotten a request to do 20 of them that would be added to gift baskets being auctioned off to benefit those who had lost everything!  It made my heart soar that I was going to be able to help so many people.
As I was working on finalizing the details of this deal, I got this message from Etsy...

WHAT????  This guy is trying to tell me that he OWNS the trademark to the term Jersey Strong???  Are you freaking kidding me????  If you do a search on Etsy for Hurricane Sandy there are hundreds of items with the term Jersey Strong.  Why the heck is my item being singled out???  It's not worth my energy to get upset about this or to fight it.  However, I really am angry, no hurt.  This is what you get when you try to help others, when you are passionate about a cause?  I'm very soured on this experience!
Thanks for letting me vent!  I feel better now!

Jersey Strong

As I mentioned in my Hurricane Sandy post the other day, the Jersey shore holds a very special place in the hearts of our family.  The devastation of our favorite vacation spot is heart breaking.

I have been trying to come up with a way to help in the restoration/recovery of the shore.  My friend, Paige from Artsy Anthrology contacted me last night and asked me if I'd like to participate in her efforts for the cause.  My response what "of course"!

I quickly got to work on my laptop and designed a Christmas ornament/sign and will donate $5 or from the cost of each ornament to directly aid in the recovery via the Hurricane Sandy NJ Relief Fund set up by the First Lady of NY!  Each ornament/sign will sell for $10 ($2 shipping)...that's a donation of 50% from the sale of each ornament!

Won't you help me help the beautiful Jersey Shore???

You can purchase this ornament in my Etsy shop here.

Oh Sandy!

As you all know, my beloved East Coast sustained a direct hit from Hurricane/ Super Storm/ Frankenstorm Sandy this past Monday and Tuesday.

While my family was personally lucky that we didn't suffer any damage from the storm, so many in our area were not so lucky.  The tragedy that continues to unfold from this Super Storm is absolutely heart-breaking.

Life is beginning to regain normalcy around here slowly but surely.  Power is coming back on a little bit at a time.  Our schools finally opened up today for the first time in a week.

I took some pics before the storm...

This is my favorite walking spot on the Hudson River the morning before Sandy hit.

This is Croton Point Park before Sandy.

I also took some pics from after the storm...

Here's my favorite walking spot again, with a boat in the middle of it!

See this boat on the train tracks?

And this guy definitely doesn't belong next to the bath house!

But check this one out!  This huge boat is more than a mile north of the yacht club it was moored at!  It's hanging with the freight trains for now!

If you've hung out here with my for a while, you know that our family takes an annual vacation to Lavallette on the Jersey Shore.  Well, our beloved vacation spot suffered enormous devastation from Sandy.  The beautiful beach that we have enjoyed for 15 years looks like a war zone.  Many of the gorgeous little beach cottages were washed clear to the other side of the island!

My daughter was watching news footage and freeze framed it until she found the cottage that we stay in every year.  It is still standing, but it makes me sick to my stomach to think of what it looks like in person.

Please keep New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut in your thoughts and prayers as they attempt to recover from this tragic storm.

xoxo

I Am Thankful For...

All of you!

Did you know that ceramic tiles can be used as inexpensive dry erase boards?  Well they can!  Add some cuteness and you have a really great gift too!

Over the weekend I made these two tiles, they are designed to sit on a tabletop or shelf with a photo easel (you can find them just about anywhere, Michaels, Walmart, etc).  I did the tiles in classic fall colors.  Use a dry erase marker to write what you are thankful for, wrap it up and you have yourself a great hostess gift for Thanksgiving!

If you want one, email me at dawn@eventuallycottage.com.  They are $11 shipped just for you guys!  You can choose brown writing or orange writing.

Another Wedding Sign

This wedding sign is special, though!  It's for my cousin (the Marine) and his new bride!

My cousin, Nick is a new Marine and is stationed in the California desert.  Back in the spring he met Jessica and they quickly fell in love.  Over the summer they got engaged and said they were planning a 2014 wedding.  I kinda had suspicions that the distance might be tough on this new couple and that 2014 date might fly out the window.  Wouldn't ya know I was right?  Lol!

Nick and Jessica eloped on August 26th!

Best wishes guys!  xoxo

If You Can't Fly With The Big Girls...

A good friend of mine and one of my best customers tagged me in this photo on FB last week and practically begged me to make it for her!
Well you know me, always up for a challenge!  Lol!
I promised her a "version" of it, and here's what I came up with...

It's painted heirloom white, and sanded.  I also applied some black ink to the edges for a more antiqued appearance.

What do you think?

DIY "Entertainment Center"

Last week, I posted about my new faux mantle here. The mantle project was born from this project...

A few years ago, the hubs brought home a monstrous entertainment center.  I wasn't a fan of it from the get go! This past year, it seemed to start deteriorating. Broken drawers, etc. I searched and searched for something to take it's place on Craigslist. I saw plenty of pieces that I liked at different stores, but I refused to pay the outrageous prices!

So, I was sitting in the livingroom a few weeks ago and had a "lightbulb moment". I dragged the hubs to Home Depot and picked up all of the supplies to make my vision come true...sounds romantic huh?

We picked up a chunky piece of wood, that the awesome guy at the store cut in 3 pieces for us, some black brackets, some Polyshades espresso satin stain (stain with poly in it). Hubs beat up the wood purdy good with a hammer and stuff, sanded it, and stained it (2 coats).

Wella...our entertainment center alternative was done! Oh...and LOVE it!!!  Oh, and yes you can see all of the ugly cords because I still haven't found a solution for them!  But ya know what?  I'm ok with it...for now!  Lol!

I added this cute galvanized bucket that I handpainted the fleur-de-lis onto for remote controls.

I made this little block to go along with my late brother's photo.  He will always be in my heart!

I'm loving this great lantern and burlap crates that I found at Home Goods!!!

Stay tuned later this week for a cute storage solution!

So what do ya think?
